Franz LisztHistorical Note

The romance between Franz Liszt and Marie d'Agoult was one of the most celebrated of the early Romantic era.

Their documented first encounter occurred in early 1833 (not 1832), at a salon given by the marquise La Vayer. That was the occasion of the famous incident with the missing parts of the Weber quartet.

Marie left her husband Charles d'Agoult to live openly with Liszt. Her daughter Louise died at the age of six in 1834. Marie bore three children to Franz Liszt (one of whom, Cosima, is famous for later marrying Richard Wagner). Liszt frequently left Marie to go on extended concert tours, and was the subject of much gossip and rumored to be a philanderer. Their relationship ended finally in 1844 when the popular press claimed to have discovered a relationship between Liszt and the dancer Lola Montez. Marie went on to become a highly respected journalist in her own right, writing under the pen name of Daniel Stern.
