Liszt's Kiss Cont...
As a musician, Liszt was very generous with his colleagues and with younger artists. He created piano transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies so that they could be more widely known, as well as of many Schubert songs. His transcription of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique was for many years the primary way the public could hear Berlioz's extraordinary work.
Liszt's generosity of spirit extended to his teaching, and in later years he never charged for lessons. He also accepted all comers, provided they were serious, and taught both amateurs and aspiring professionals. He is credited with inventing the term "master class," which subsequently became the predominant way of teaching solo musicians. Although he never developed a formal method, he taught for his entire life, even up until the last week of his life. Liszt died in Bayreuth in 1886 at the age of 75.
